West Midlands will be the first area to trial 5G
The West Midlands has been chosen to be the UK’s first test area of the high-speed mobile internet, 5G ahead of a national roll out. The 5G internet connection is expected to revolutionise healthcare and public transport, and areas including Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton will receive up to £75m worth of public investment to develop the internet coverage.
Digital Minister, Margot James has said that the new technology, which is due to be put in place in the West Midlands early next year, will transform daily life. The projects using 5G are expected to focus on the health, construction and automotive sectors.
There are hopes that the 5G technology will help to improve traffic flow, reduce accidents for public transport as well as help to potentially stop antisocial behaviour. Major telecoms providers such as Vodafone and EE, all won contracts to provide the bandwidth needed for the future of 5G and the services are expected to be rolled out nationally in 2020.
