Social media giants Facebook and Twitter have reportedly removed and suspended a number of accounts following inauthentic and manipulating behaviour. The accounts, which were located in (yes, you guessed it) Russia and Iran, were removed after Chief Executive and big boss at Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg identified them as being misleading.
More than 650 Facebook pages and 284 Twitter accounts have been either removed or suspended. Facebook advised that the accounts were linked to campaigns that originated in Iran and Russia and made the decision to ban the accounts as they want to ensure the connections they make are trustworthy.
The social channels acted upon these issues following a tip off from cyber security firm FireEye after releasing information that established a number of accounts promoting Iranian propaganda.Although investigations are still underway to determine exactly what the specific accounts are up to, the current findings have been passed onto the UK and US governments.
